About

My name is Hillary Christie, originally from Canada but now based in Hampshire, UK. I’ve been gardening professionally since 2022 and my passion is transforming gardens into sanctuaries where both humans and wildlife can coexist.

I grew up on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and spent a large part of my childhood outdoors, mainly in the rain, which prepared me quite well for settling in the UK!
I have worn many hats in my working life: carer, technical writer, barista, but I found myself bouncing from job to job looking for something that was missing.
In 2021 a fellow gardener offered me a chance to apprentice under her and in a short time I realised how fulfilling it was to work alongside birds and bugs, to improve spaces so that wildlife returned, and to see clients reap the benefits of spending time in their gardens.
Within a year I made gardening my full-time job and found that it had a profoundly positive effect on my physical and mental wellbeing.
I founded Sanctuary Gardening Services out of a desire to share these benefits with others. In my free time I enjoy camping, multi-day treks, reading and playing board games with my family.
I’m a big mental health advocate and hope in future to help anyone with barriers to employment to consider gardening as a career opportunity.
